game design (Collage work!)

(Warning, college work)
A game designer has to think about the gamer, and how the end result will be!
Designers should look at other games, look at there basics, look at what makes them great and what makes them floored, Seeing how other games work would help others create there's!

Pokemon

Lets look at Pokemon, kids and teens buy Pokemon, but why?
lets look at the basics, what is pokemon about? why do people like to play it?
Well first the game is about a Pokemon trainer wanting to become the very best like no one ever was (especially better then Gary Oak), how does he do this? he levels up his Pokemon, by spending time with it, the game awards you for spending time with your Pokemon, then occasionally it'll evolve, another reward, people like to see something they spend time with get stronger, faster better, and when it evolves it gets a new more tough evolution!

People also like discovering new things, this is another way pokemon keeps interesting, originally there was only 8bit pokemon in black, and well green colors, so to create a new pokemon was difficult, but they made 151 that where kept in the game, they kept them new and interesting threw out the game, and a massive reason pokemon became a success was because Mew was a hidden character, to get it was a feat, and there where so many rumors, in its day and age, Pokemon was wonderful, so many mystery's, so many
made up tale's and experiences, discovering new things was so fun for people!

There was also a show to go along with the game giving you tip's while also keeping you entertained, making you want to play the game, try to find that pokemon, learn that move etc!
another big feature of pokemon was that it's portable, if you caught a zapdos you came in to school or collage, you showed everyone and they where amazed, and what was the main goal of the game again? to become the very best, In Pokemon if you beat the elite four you still have your friends to challenge, they where always getting better, so you had to keep playing to stay ahead, gain skills and ideas to beat them and actually become the very best!

so in conclusion why is Pokemon good?
Trying to become the best over coming countless challenges against both virtual and physical people.
Rewarded for spending time on the game.
Having adventures discovering new things

Now I'm not saying that's all whats good, that's just the basic's I'd be here all day if I tried to go threw everything, that's great design wise in pokemon!

Gravity Rush

So gravity Rush is a game I adore lets talk about its design!
You play as a female protagonist, which is always nice when most games only have male protagonists, this gains both male and female audiences, females have someone they can relate more to and males have a female idle which will develop a less sexist mind, the character also has amnesia, which makes you and the character more connected as you are both exploring this world together!

The big thing about this game is that you can change gravity this is a fun game design, this makes you think about how you can get from one place to the other quickly, the game has it so your gravity power runs out in a certain amount of time, this makes it so you have to be more tactical to kill enemy's in a certain time. this creates tactics that you can improve on, there's also a leveling system if you go around creating gems, which both creating interesting gameplay!

Aesthetically the game looks great, it has a sell shaded look, which gives it an anime look, and looks amazing, the visuals are impressive to get peoples attention, the main area is a darkish place to set the scene, which looks great with the game, this makes the player emerced, The gravity puts a orbit around Kat to give player feedback, and make it feel more realistic, Kats hair always falls towards the ground even if cat is on a wall, so it shows you which way you will fall if you stop using the power, it's also athletically pleasing!

Zelda Majoras Mask

Majora's mask is a game that came directly after ocarina of time
this game is set in termina. its much cruller!
The visuals are darker, the moon has a face that scares the living day light out of you, as it gets closer coming to destroy the world, the moon looks much more fearsome and scary with a face of anger then without any face, when Link puts a mask on, the camera angles become dynamic, Link screams, as the mask and him become one, this creates fear, and you feel the agony of Link and the spirit of the mask!

The game covers the enemy's face in a mask to conceal identity and make it scarier, but as time goes on, you find out the mask is the enemy, making the mask much more intimidating, the game makes you go threw the cut scene, because you need the mask to do the ability!

The game does a good job in making you feel alone even though there are people around, especially in the ice temple, the music is used to convey, and in the town, day one the tempo is normal, but by day 3 the tempo is sped up with the other sounds going normal speed creating an urge of desperation!

There's a play threw of this game here

All three of these games have a way of you progressing, 2 of them feature a leveling system, all 3 contain new abilities!
When you get so far in Gravity rush you will gain the ability to learn a new move, In pokemon you will be given a HM or ™, and in Legend of Zelda MM you will get a mask!
Accessing these new things are different,

In pokemon you level up the pokemon that will learn new moves, and more powerful, sometimes you must do something to trigger someone to give you the HM, but to use the HM you have to have a pokemon of a certain type and ability in pokemon, whereas in Gravity Rush and Zelda you must get to a certain part in the game you will get the ability, and you can use them straight off, without having to worry about what characters you have, but in Zelda MM you must change the mask, remove them and change continuously to beat the game whereas Gravity rush, you can use the abilities without messing around with items!

They work with the game, without changing mask’s it wouldn’t make sense to have the ability in LOZ MM, but having to change things around in Gravity rush would be confusing, and you cant surf with a pidgy in pokemon now could you?
The leveling system in Pokemon and Gravity Rush are different, in pokemon you fight random pokemon until you level up, each pokemon gives off a different amount of EXP depending on level, Type, etc, and you can level upto, level 100 right in the first grass you see, but that would be boring and take forever due to the amount of pokemon you will have to fight to level up!

Gravity Rush does this differently by making it so you have to collect precious gems, these are used to level up, theres a lot to collect, and you can start right away, but the game limits you, the game gives you a max amount of times you can level up a move until your character has to progress through the game!

In gravity rush you level up moves, but in pokemon you can only level up the creature, and in pokemon when you level up, how it levels up is decided by the game, you can choose how much base attack you want it to up compared to the HP, SP etc, where as in Gravity rush you can choose what you want to use your Precious gems on!
